Introducing Haliotis 2: Wastewater treatment and valorization at Nice Côte d'Azur

On Thursday, April 20, 2023, in Nice, Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area, President Delegate of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region, and Sabrina Soussan, CEO of SUEZ, jointly unveiled Haliotis 2, the future wastewater treatment and recovery complex for the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area. This is the largest project in France and one of the biggest in Europe, representing a market worth 700 million euros.

Advanced Treatment and Valorization:

Haliotis 2 est une avancée majeure en matière de traitement des eaux usées, répondant aux normes environnementales et sanitaires futures. La station, d’une capacité impressionnante, traitera les eaux usées de 26 communes, équivalant à une population de 680 000 habitants.

An European Cluster of Ecological Technologies:

Haliotis 2 is positioned as a European hub for cutting-edge technologies, offering an “all-in-one” approach to the ecological transition. The plant will treat wastewater, eliminate various pollutants including microplastics, manage sewage sludge, sand and air quality, while generating new sources of renewable energy such as biomethane, solar power, and heating and cooling solutions for buildings.

Exceptional Environmental Performance:

Haliotis 2’s performance will exceed health standards, with almost 90% of microplastics eliminated by the plant. An industrial treated wastewater reuse unit will also be operational, recycling 5 million cubic meters of water per year. This capacity is equivalent to the entire watering needs of Nice’s green spaces and road cleaning.

This achievement illustrates the commitment of Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur and SUEZ to ecological innovation, placing Haliotis 2 at the heart of technological advances for environmental preservation and sustainable management of water resources.
